Language of Literature: Ch.6-8 Vocabulary and Questions

Reading Strategies

Question- While you read, question what's happening. Searching for reasons behind events and characters' actions can help you get more involved in what you read.

Connect- Connect personally with what you're reading. Think of similarities between the descriptions in the selection and what you have personally experienced, heard, or read.

Predict- Try to figure out what will happen next and how the selection might end. Then read on to see if you made good guesses.

Clarify- Stop occasionally to review what you understand so far, and expect to have your understanding change and develop as you read on.

Evaluate- Form opinions about what you read, both while you're reading and after you've finished. Make judgments about the characters and develop your own ideas about events.

Visualize- Make a picture in your mind of what the text says. Imagine you are looking at what is describe.

Literary Terms

Plot- the series of incidents or happenings in a story. The plot is the outline or arrangement of events.

Setting- the time and place of the action in a story; where and when the action takes place.

Mood- the feeling or atmosphere that the writer creates. For example, the mood of a story might be joyous or suspenseful.

Theme- the main idea of a story.

Style- the way in which a writer uses language. The choice and arrangement of words and sentences help to create the author’s style.

Purpose- the reason the author wrote the story. For example, an author’s purpose might be to amuse or entertain, to convince, or to inform.

Characterization- the ways a writer shows what a character is like. The way a character acts, speaks, thinks and looks characterizes that person.

Ch.6-8 Vocabulary and Questions

Vocabulary
Designated, Interdependence, Indulgently, Reprieve,Inadequate, Consciousness, Podium, Sanitation, Scrupulously, Impulse, Nourishment Retroactive, Escalating, Studious, Avert, Crescendo, Vibrant, Anxiety, Intently and Spontaneously.

Define each vocabulary word. Then use the word in a sentence.

Example: Stowed: A. put away; B. The students stowed her favorite mechanical pencil inside of the fabric that wrapped her three-ring binder.

Questions

What do you think of the concept of a replacement child?

What, if anything, strikes you as strange about the Ceremony of Loss?

Draw a picture of one of the Ceremonies?

Do you think it would be possible in our world to have a match-making service with 100% success rate, like the one in the community?

Do you have the same certainty as Jonas that his Assignment will be the right one? Why or why not?

How would you characterize the Chief Elder?

That do you think of the ritual of thanking people-for example, for their feelings, their dreams, and their childhood?

What is unusual about The Receiver? What meaning do you find in this?

How is it possible that Jonas never noticed The Receiver before?

Ten years before, the Committee of Elders failed in their selection of a Receiver. What else happened ten years before? Tell if you think the two events might be connected and how?

What makes choosing a Receiver exceptionally difficult?

What do you think a Receiver of Memory might do? Could anyone in our country/culture be considered a Receiver of Memory? In other counties/cultures that you know?
